The name Temple of the Moby Hack comes from a whim by MC in a good mood, inspired by both the Discordian Society tradition of silly names and titles and the name of the subcultural and/or religious group Temple ov the Psychik Youth.
Many hackers, in the old-school meaning of computer geek or enthusiast, almost worship a "moby hack" like an insanely beautiful computer program, a beautiful computer architecture (think about the PDP-10 and the almost religious devotion to it) or an exceptionally clever solution to a problem. Hence "the temple of the moby hack": a place for worshipping marvellous and beautiful solutions.
MC also thought some people would remember The Hack Machine, a public access Unix system MC used to run in Elder Times, that is, circa 1993. In some ways, the hack.org domain and the computer hosting these services is continuing the spirit of The Hack Machine.
